Work/Life Conflicts
I think it is very interesting how the work place today wants to control people’s lives. I as a college student still living at home with my family was working at starbucks; they wanted me to make starbucks my life. It was kind of ridiculous, I was just promoted and I was not yet getting paid for the position. They tried to make me work on a holiday because they would not let me request the day off, then gave the day off to other people who had worked there less than me. It was made very clear to me that Starbucks was more important than my own personal life. I did not agree with the company’s policy so I left. I believe that there should be a strict line drawn between work and life.

I am very happy to hear that you have already established the balance so many professionals struggle with. I have had close friends and family members literally have mental break downs from taking on too many responsibilities at work. One of my friends was out of work for six years. Once their boss moved on, they retained their position and took on the managers work load as well. Needless to say, once recovered, she was very hesitant to return to the workforce despite all that she has to offer. Most companies like to make the organizational and social life seamless however, as the American culture and economics change, I hear about more and more organizations avoiding employees who give the vibe that the company will be their life. They too want to see the balance.
Athina Scores!
I agree with Athina of Greece when she says that she's happy you've already established that line. I wrote about this concept in one of my blogs as well, and as I said there, this is definitely a hard concept for me. I tend to make my work my life. I also agree with you that I believe it has a lot to do with the organization as well. They like to make work your life too. I think it's because most senior staff has done so they don't understand why you don't live, breathe and eat the company. As I stated in my blog, this is definitely a conflict people will be struggling with for years to come.
