Feature Lead: An Alarming Event

Tulsa, Okla.- Firefighters crash 95 year old woman's birthday party.
The First United Methodist Church women's group threw a Birthday party for 95 year old Mabel McCullough.  They had a carrot cake with 95 candles and with help she blew them all out. Eddi Carlin commented, "There wasn't an inch to spare. By the time we had them all lit, it looked like a torch. The party had just sat down to eat when they saw 24 firefighters standing in the doorway. The smoke from the birthday candles set off a smoke alarm. As a result, five engines and two ladder companies arrived. Fire Chief Lonnie Lamb commented, " In my 23 years on the job, I've seen a lot of things set off a fire alarm, but I don't think I've ever heard of one going off because of a birthday cake." Although the firefighters didn't eat birthday cake they did take a picture with McCollough.

You only had to do one of these (on the class schedule, it says to "pick one").

This one has the same problems: An opening sentence that reads like a headline, not a lead, and that doesn't really get my attention in a fun and engaging way.
